THE WINERY AND THE HISTORY OF THE VINE

The history of Moscato di Scanzo is shrouded in mystery and allure. Genetically, this vine is the result of a spontaneous cross between Moscato Bianco and an indigenous vine still unknown, a secret jealously guarded by the gentle hills of Italy’s smallest DOCG.

For centuries, this vine has adapted wonderfully to the unique terroir of Scanzo, a land rich in Sass de Luna, a lunar stone that gives Moscato Martinelli unmistakable organoleptic characteristics.

The cultivation of vines in this area dates back to ancient times. During the excavation for the Vigna Sporla planting, remains of ancient terraces were found, evidence of a winemaking tradition rooted in the past. It is believed that vines were already cultivated during the period when the Monaci Umiliati, between the 12th and 14th centuries, resided in the oratory of San Giovanni nei Boschi, now in ruins.

A PLACE WHERE WINE AND NATURE MEET

in timeless harmony

The history of Moscato di Scanzo is also the history of illustrious figures. At the end of the 19th century, architect Giacomo Quarenghi, bringing the marvelous Scanzo passito to the Tsar’s court in Saint Petersburg, became the ambassador of this precious wine, helping to spread its fame worldwide.

The new Martinelli winery is an example of sustainability. The prefabricated and semi-underground structure integrates perfectly into the landscape, utilizing the natural slope of the terrain. The roof, planted, blends with the new vineyard, creating a harmonious ecosystem. An architecture that respects the environment and enhances the territory.

Today, Cantina Martinelli continues to cultivate this precious vine, keeping alive the traditions of the past and aiming for a future of innovation and quality, passing down a legacy of centuries of winemaking history and passion.
