Today we’ll explain why at Cantina Martinelli we celebrate women on March 8th, but not only then.
Historically, wine and everything related to its production has long been a male domain, with women often excluded from both the production world and professional tasting.
You can count on one hand the few enlightened pioneers who broke old stereotypes and still sign prestigious French bottles today, but if we focus on our territory and more recent times, an interesting fact I like to highlight is that today, women are increasingly taking center stage, occupying prominent roles as producers, winemakers, sommeliers, and communicators.
Do you remember what happened on March 17, 1986? The methanol wine scandal, a tragic event that in just a few months erased 6,000 years of wine culture.
This tragedy especially shook women’s consciences, and not by chance in 1988 the Donne del Vino association was founded, which today counts over 1,200 members.
We women producers are naturally inclined toward sustainable and ethical approaches, attentive to caring for the land. Why? At Cantina Martinelli we know very well how important the environment where we raise our children is—we know it’s a gift we receive on loan and must pass on intact to future generations. Another factor we observe with pleasure is that we’re also conquering the world of sommellerie, thanks to our keen olfactory sensitivity and ability to pair food and wine.
The wine tasting experiences we offer at Cantina Martinelli are tested by a team of all-female palates and noses. We’re generally open to new, less traditional, more modern and inclusive approaches. And even though there’s no such thing (thankfully 😉) as a “woman’s wine,” female productions often tend to focus on elegance, pleasant drinkability, and intense aromas, rather than mere alcoholic power.
As proof of the above, something we often notice with pleasure during our guided tours is that the women who participate approach our wines with curiosity, seek out the story behind our labels, and greatly appreciate the sensory experience of tasting, at which they’re truly excellent. They’re not afraid to offer answers that are often correct. And if they’re not? We all laugh about it together—we don’t judge. At Cantina Martinelli we welcome and educate.
The tour our female guests prefer, the red one focused on our native Moscato di Scanzo, begins with a glass of Rosa Rosae, followed by one of Eremita, and finally a glass of Moscato di Scanzo DOCG—a 360-degree, comprehensive experience they approach with great competence. But the beautiful thing is that it’s experienced as a moment of sharing and pleasure, demonstrating that wine is approached consciously and in an emancipated way, definitively breaking an axiom that no longer has any reason to exist.
Our very own conclusion? Women and wine are a winning combination, because it’s based on expertise and passion.
